House EPW Committee Advances Speaker’s Education Reform Bill

The House Education and Public Works Committee met this week to further amended and approve the Speaker’s education reform. At the end of January, Speaker Jay Lucas (R-Darlington) introduced comprehensive proposals for education reform with the support of the governor. The bill includes comprehensive reforms and was vetted by the subcommittee for over a month. The House is expected to take up the bill next week on the floor.

The Senate Education Subcommittee also met this to continue its review the Senate version of the bill, S. 419.

Santee Cooper Study Committee Continues Work

This week, the original joint committee created to study a potential sale of the state-owned utility Santee Cooper met to continue its work.

Toomey Confirmed as DHEC Director

The Senate confirmed Dr. Rick Toomey as the new Director of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

Senate Committee Approved Former Representative’s Nomination After Questions

This week, the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee revisited the confirmation of former representative Mike Pitts as executive director at the S.C. Conservation Bank.
